    Position Title: Special Education Instructional Assistant, PBS (Positive Behavior Support) Program

    Department: Special Education
    Supervisor: School Site Principal

    Term of Employment: 9 month
    Salary Classification: 8
    Job Summary: Provides a variety of behavioral and instructional assistance and support services associated with the PBS program, general and specialized educational programs, and student needs.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES generally include the following:
    • Show initiative in recognizing, assessing and re-directing negative interactions between students
    • Initiate appropriate behavior interventions with students during classroom instruction
    • Promotes use of appropriate strategies to cope with and express emotions
    • Facilitates positive student peer and staff interactions
    • Lead small groups reinforcing instruction as directed by classroom teacher
    • Monitor and record student behavior data as directed by classroom teacher
    • Monitor student behavior during classes and transition periods (i.e. between classes, bus, lunch, etc.)
    • Maintain positive, supportive relationship with students
    • Maintain documentation and records/data for student files
    • Prepare and distribute classroom learning materials according to teacher direction
    • Perform other duties as assigned or required
    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
    • Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county and city statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances and PUSD policies and procedures
    • Knowledge of principles of behavior management
    • Knowledge of the principles of record and file management.
    • Knowledge of the principles of basic child development stages
    • Skill in following and giving oral and written directions
    • Skill in preventing, and deescalating negative behaviors
    • Skill in instructing and assisting students in self-help living skills
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school district
    • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Have obtained an associate (or higher) degree OR
    • Have at least two years of post-secondary education that is equivalent to at least 48 semester hours from an accredited higher education institution OR
    • Have met a rigorous standard of quality by demonstrating knowledge on a Paraprofessional Assessment, available at the Peoria Unified School District Office

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    • Must be able to pass a fingerprint and background clearance check.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona driver’s license.
    • May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 60 pounds.
    • May be required to physically restrain or run after a student.
    • May be required to work outside normal working hours
    • May be required to travel to perform work functions
